THE MEN WITH FIVE TONGUES

“The men with five tongues” is an installation artwork consisting of 100 black industrial fans in a dark room. When the audience approaches the dark room, an infrared proximity sensor will operate the electrical fans, turning them fast, generating a strong and intimidating wind. Black fans installed in the dark room represent anonymous people living in this age with treacherous tongues. I would like to call them, “tongue people.” The blades of the fans, generating strong wind, blowing the clothes of audience, are the tongues that speak the language of complaints, curses, insults, flattery, and mockery. They are the people with degenerated bodies who spit out chilling words, nodding their heads, while saying things that immediately dissipate into the thin air. Whoever they are, wherever they are, they are reborn as electrical fans in my work: the fans are the shadows of people in the modern world.

‘다섯 개의 혀를 가진 사람들’은 어두운 방안에 검정색 산업용 선풍기 100대가 촘촘하게 설치된 작품이다. 캄캄한 공간으로 들어서면 근접 적외선 센서로 작동되는 선풍기들이 빠르게 회전하며 위압적인 강풍을 뿜어낸다. 검은 방에 가득 찬 검정 선풍기들은 동시대를 살며 시시각각 혀를 놀려대는 익명의 사람들, 즉 ’혀인간’을 상징한다. 옷깃이 세차게 펄럭일 정도의 거친 바람을 일으키는 날카로운 다섯 개의 선풍기 날개는 음지에서 불평, 저주, 욕설, 아첨과 조롱으로 진화된 익명인의 혀이다. 퇴화된 몸뚱이로 고개를 까딱이며 금새 허공으로 증발해버리는 서늘한 말들을 쏟아내는 사람들의 모습이다. 그들이 어디에 있는 누구이든 나의 작품을 통해 현대인의 그림자인 선풍기로 다시 태어난다.
