Introduction
JEON BYEONG SAM, a South Korean artist who has established a unique territory in contemporary art, has been focusing on the artistic possibilities of "The Finite." He explores the process by which objects with a beginning and an end acquire a new sense of presence through repetition and layering.
Held as part of Singapore Art Week 2026, the exhibition JEON BYEONG SAM: InterFace presents 21 new works, including three large-scale fabric installations. This exhibition centers on the face—the most distinctive human element—reconstructing the diversity of individuals across different races, genders, ages, and professions into experimental compositions using the artist’s signature "repetition-layer" technique.
The artist has gathered 30 representative human portraits, including 10 Singaporeans—such as the nation’s beloved actor Mark Lee and famous influencer Chiou Huey—as well as acquaintances from around the world met through previous exhibitions and virtual personas generated by AI technology.
Bridging the real and the virtual, the artist prints approximately 20,000 photographs of these subjects onto fabric and paper, followed by a disciplined, performative process of precise layering. In this process, the specific features of the individuals vanish, leaving behind only the abstract color patterns created by the countless layers. These serve as "collective visual units" that transcend individual identity, symbolizing the new types of relationships we form within the complex networks of contemporary society.
"My work is a process of drawing out infinite contemplation through finite matter," says JEON BYEONG SAM. Through this exhibition in Singapore—a crossroads of diverse cultures and values—he poses fundamental questions about the essence of existence. We invite you to join this journey of stacking the textures of finite beings to create a space for infinite thought.

About the Artist:

JEON BYEONG SAM is a South Korean contemporary artist best known for his unique forms of abstract art created with extremely repetitive and dense arrangement of specific objects or their photographs. He focuses on 'the finite', everything in the world that has a beginning and an end. It encompasses not only individual life but also nations, industries, cultures, ethnicities, ideologies, and languages—concepts we once believed to be eternal. His work explores the infinite possibilities within the finitude of material. This is not merely a visual experiment but an artistic contemplation on the fundamental question, 'What is existence?'
He studied in sculpture at Hongik University, received MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and MS from the University of California, Irvine. In 2014, he was selected as ‘Homocriens,’ a representative convergence talent of Korea, by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning. He worked as the artistic director of the 9th Cheongju International Biennale. In 2016, he held an invitational exhibition at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France, and collaborated with Lamborghini in Beijing, China. His artworks have been invited to UNESCO (France), SIAF (Japan), SIGGRAPH (USA), ISIMD (Turkey), AsiaGraph (China), ArtBots (Ireland), Salon (Cuba), LIFE (Russia), Netfilmmakers (Denmark), and Siggraph ASIA (Singapore).
